Stress can be defined as “forces from the outside world that affect the individual as well as the environment”. Stress, then, is not exclusive to humans. All animals are subject to stress. How we react to certain types of stress can be a matter of survival.

But what is truly amazing is how humans have been able to respond to stresses in nearly unfathomable ways. We have not just evolved, we have innovated.

Taking a task that is tedious or cumbersome and finding a way to exert the least amount of energy as possible, is what cynics refer to as laziness, but what I prefer to call efficiency. Innovation is the place where laziness and efficiency are elegantly woven together.

There is so much about this commercial that I like. To begin, I like that this commercial starts off with a shot of two guys pulling over to take a piss. That in and of itself is ridiculous.

Next, I like how realistic the reaction to the fire is. What would you do if a fire started right next to you while you were taking a leak? As a woman, peeing on it is not my first reaction–far too dangerous.

Up to this point while watching this advertisement, I’m wondering to myself “what is going on?”. And this is when our story makes an important dramatic plot shift. This is the moment that this goes from being a drama to being a comedy.

Not only is it a comedy, it’s a superhero action comedy. Our once ordinary, middle- aged balding peeing on the side of a mountain guy is now saving the day! He is empowered.

Empowered by his higher blood pressure.

In the winter of ’06, after days of more snow than either of us had seen in our home state before, Ms. Doolittle and I seriously contemplated purchasing, what we deftly labeled “really tall dairy boot things”. We were enamored by the idea of walking, undaunted, anywhere we pleased through the snow while remaining warm. I have looked around for those dairy boots but the closest thing that I have been able to find are waders. While I associate waters with my dad and fly fishing, I am certain that Ms. Doolittle and I would have bridged the gap between fashion and function with style, grace and stubbornness had the snow continued

or had we been in Venice for the first few days of December this year. Venice is flooded.

While official admit the Venice is in a fragile state, most Venetians, with their waders strapped on, continue with the day to day activities of life.

Last week the the financial security of the world economy was given a good “never-shake-a-baby” kind of shake. As a result thousands of high maintenance live-in girlfriends/aspiring socialites, and kept women were in a state of panic as the icy realization of their future began to take shape in their minds–shop girl! Additionally, many who had counted themselves among the super-wealthy were stunned to find that they were now only wealthy or just upper-middle class.

Meanwhile, despite panic in the strength and stability of the US economy, I still have $57.
Below is a recipe for my new favorite meal that will fill your belly with good cheer at a minimal cost.

Porkolt – serves 4
2lbs Any meat (I have only used beef), cubed
3-4 big onions, finely chopped
oil
3-4 T good quality sweet Hungarian paprika
salt/pepper to taste
1 green pepper (a spicy one, not a bell pepper), sliced
1 good quality tomato, whole

Heat oil. Add onions and cook until translucent. Remove from heat and add paprika, stirring until mixed in. Return to heat and add meat. Cover with onions. Add enough water to nearly cover meat/onions. Add pepper and whole tomato (remove tomato before serving). Salt/pepper to taste. Simmer mixture, covered, for 1.5 hours. Add water as necessary to prevent burning. Remove lid and reduce to desired thickness. Serve over boiled potatoes.

I would imagine that mushrooms could be substituted for the beef for a vegetarian version. I would cook the mushrooms first, allowing them to become crispy and golden brown.

I moved to Austin. It has been about a month and I’m settled in and semi-confident in finding my way around town. I don’t have a job and that stresses me out a little, but I’m going to just keeping moving forward because, what the hell else am I supposed to do? I have money for next month’s rent, and possibly the utilities. There is food in the in the fridge and liquor in the cabinets. I guess I’m doin’ alright.

Austin is in a severe drought and experiencing a nearly record breaking number of +100 degree days. According to the locals, last year Austin experienced 3 days over 100 degrees and this year there have been more than 45 days over 100 degrees. In other words, it is fucking hot. And that is all I have to complain about regarding Capital City.

Yes, it is as awesome as they say it is out here. The people are friendly and helpful, in fact, I witnessed excellent customer service from a State funded institution! It was jaw-dropping. No vacant stare, no mad-dogging. I love my home city of Albuqueruqe, but customer service was swallowed and pooped out by nepotism long ago.

There are so many locally owned restaurants here that the basic standard for a good meal is raised, while frequently the price of the meal is not.

Music. I won’t insult you or “the scene” by trying to sum up the music. It is called the Live Music Capital of the World for a reason.

But my current favorite part of Austin is I Luv Video. One of the two locations is .9 miles from where I live and it is two floors of every movie a movie-dork wants. To name a few of their neatly marked sections: New Hollywood release, Hong Kong action films, Blaxploitation films you have never heard of, Documentaries on Blaxploitation films you have haver heard of, Bollywood movies, a Criterion Film edition section, anime, porn (probably anime porn) and t.v. shows ( I found all of the MST3K episodes) just to name a few. The movie loving employees at I Luv Video are friendly. There is no doubt that these people know more about movies than I do, but they don’t feel compelled to prove it. The membership fee at I Luv Video is $2.50 with a valid i.d and credit card. A fee they will waive if you surrender you Blockbuster card to them. There are cut up bb cards hanging all over the store.

And on Tuesdays after 6pm there is free beer for 21+ members. That’s right, free beer. Oh, did I mention that Tejas has number of miro-breweries and that the free beer is good beer? We enjoyed one of the Real Ale Brewing Company‘s brews, from a cold, cold keg. I don’t even like beer that much, but I’m not stupid. Free, good beer. An array of fantastic films. Fill up me plastic cup!
