He actually was getting stoned, and dropped a burning ember in his lap causing him to crash into the tree. This caused his pipe to shatter with a two-fold effect: he hit a fire hydrant, and cut up his lips. His wife then smashed out the back window and pulled him out of the car to ask where he hid the rest of the stash so the cops wouldn't find it. There was no alcohol involved.
